EMDR Intensive

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a well-established, evidence-based psychotherapy used to help individuals recover from trauma, distressing memories, and overwhelming life experiences.

EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess memories that remain emotionally charged or unresolved. Through a structured therapeutic approach that includes bilateral stimulation and focused attention, distressing experiences can be processed in a way that reduces their emotional intensity and ongoing impact.

Rather than repeatedly talking through traumatic events, EMDR helps individuals work through the beliefs, emotions, body sensations, and reactions connected to past experiences.

Many people find that EMDR can lead to:

  • reduced emotional distress

  • less reactivity to triggers

  • healthier beliefs about themselves

  • greater nervous system regulation

  • improved day-to-day wellbeing

EMDR is widely used in the treatment of PTSD, Complex Trauma, anxiety, grief, and other trauma-related presentations.

How EMDR Works

EMDR is one of the most extensively researched therapies for trauma and is recognised as an effective treatment for PTSD and trauma-related distress.

Traumatic experiences can sometimes remain stored in the nervous system in an unprocessed form. Rather than feeling like something from the past, they can continue to be experienced in the present through intrusive memories, emotional overwhelm, body tension, avoidance, hypervigilance, or negative beliefs such as I am not safe or I am not good enough.

EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories so they are stored in a more adaptive and less distressing way. Using a structured protocol and bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements or tapping), the brain is supported to integrate the memory, reduce emotional intensity, and update the meanings attached to the experience.

As treatment progresses, many people notice that memories feel less charged, triggers reduce, and long-held beliefs begin to shift. The event may still be remembered, but it no longer carries the same emotional impact or sense of threat.

Research consistently shows EMDR can significantly reduce PTSD symptoms and create meaningful change for many people, often more efficiently than talk-based therapy alone.

What is the difference between EMDR, and an EMDR intensive?

Traditional EMDR therapy is usually delivered in weekly or fortnightly sessions, often over a longer period of time.

An EMDR Intensive provides the same evidence-based therapy in a more concentrated format, using longer sessions delivered more frequently over a shorter timeframe. For example, this may involve 2-hour sessions across several days or multiple sessions within the same week.

This format can allow deeper therapeutic momentum, reduced stop-start disruption between sessions, and a more focused pathway to processing unresolved trauma or distressing experiences.

For many people, an intensive model can be an effective way to make meaningful progress within a shorter period.

Evidence for EMDR Intensive

Emerging research suggests that EMDR delivered in an intensive format can be as effective as standard weekly EMDR for many people, while allowing treatment to occur over a shorter and more focused period. For some individuals, this concentrated format may improve momentum, reduce the stop-start nature of weekly therapy, and make it easier to engage deeply in trauma treatment. As with all therapy, suitability and outcomes vary between individuals.
