CONDITIONS WE TREAT
A Trauma-Informed Approach to Complex Mental Health
At Aperio Trauma Clinic, we specialise in working with individuals experiencing trauma-related and treatment-resistant mental health conditions.
While symptoms may present as anxiety, depression, or emotional overwhelm, these experiences are often rooted in unprocessed trauma and nervous system dysregulation.
Our approach focuses on understanding and treating the underlying drivers of distress, rather than only managing surface-level symptoms.

Our Clinical Focus
We provide care for individuals experiencing:
-
Treatment-Resistant Complex Trauma
-
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
-
Treatment-Resistant Depression
Each of these conditions can significantly impact quality of life, relationships, and day-to-day functioning. Many of our patients have already engaged in therapy or medication with limited or short-term benefit.

Treatment-Resistant Complex Trauma
Complex trauma often develops through repeated or prolonged exposure to distressing experiences, particularly in early life or within relationships.
Rather than a single event, it reflects patterns of:
-
emotional invalidation
-
instability or unpredictability
-
chronic stress or threat
Over time, this can shape how a person experiences themselves, others, and the world.
Common presentations include:
-
Persistent emotional dysregulation
-
Difficulties in relationships and attachment
-
Chronic feelings of emptiness, shame, or disconnection
-
Hypervigilance or ongoing anxiety
-
A sense of being “stuck” despite insight and effort
When is it treatment-resistant?
Many individuals with complex trauma have engaged in therapy for years, yet continue to experience:
-
recurring patterns
-
limited behavioural change
-
difficulty accessing deeper emotional processing
Our model is designed to support deeper therapeutic access and integration, particularly where traditional approaches have not led to sustained improvement.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
PTSD can develop following exposure to a traumatic event such as an accident, assault, or life-threatening experience.
Symptoms often involve the nervous system remaining in a heightened state of threat, even when the danger has passed.
Common symptoms include:
-
Intrusive memories or flashbacks
-
Nightmares or disrupted sleep
-
Avoidance of reminders of the event
-
Hyperarousal (on edge, easily startled)
-
Emotional numbing or detachment
Treatment-resistant PTSD
Some individuals continue to experience significant symptoms despite evidence-based treatments such as:
-
trauma-focused therapy
-
EMDR
-
medication
In these cases, a more intensive and integrative treatment model may be required to support recovery.

Treatment-Resistant Depression
Depression can present as persistent low mood, loss of motivation, and reduced engagement with life.
For some individuals, depression does not respond adequately to standard treatments, including multiple trials of therapy and medication.
Common experiences include:
-
Ongoing low mood or emotional flatness
-
Loss of interest or pleasure
-
Fatigue and low energy
-
Negative self-perception
-
Difficulty initiating or sustaining change
When depression is treatment-resistant
Treatment-resistant depression is typically considered when:
-
multiple treatment approaches have been tried
-
improvements are minimal or not sustained
-
symptoms significantly impact daily functioning
In many cases, underlying trauma, emotional disconnection, or unresolved psychological processes contribute to ongoing symptoms.
Our approach focuses on working at this deeper level to support meaningful and lasting change.
A Different Approach to Treatment
At Aperio Trauma Clinic, we recognise that many individuals seeking care have:
-
already tried multiple treatment pathways
-
developed insight into their difficulties
-
yet continue to feel stuck
Our model provides a structured, supported, and evidence-based pathway designed to access and process experiences that may not be reachable through conventional approaches alone.
Considering a Referral
This service may be appropriate for individuals who:
-
have not responded to standard treatments
-
experience persistent trauma-related symptoms
-
are able to engage in a structured therapeutic process
We welcome referrals from GPs, psychiatrists, and allied health professionals.
